Barbies used to be the toy that every little girl dreamed of having. Barbies were the perfect self-image on how a little girl wanted to look; now this is wrong, and a change is happening to turn Barbie back around. According to Eliana Dockterman, author of “A Barbie for Everybody,” the way Barbie looks is influencing little girls to make their body look like it. Dockterman explains when a little girl receives a Barbie, she notices her looks. She notices how perfect the doll appears to be and develops a self-image in her mind of how she needs to look. Now, mothers have stopped buying Barbies for their daughters because of this reason. According to Richard Dickson, Chief Operating Officer of Mattel, “Barbie was having an identity crisis” (qtd. in Dockterman par. 13). However, Mattel, company of Barbie, did not agree with this statement: “A handful of studies, however, suggest that Barbie does have at least some influence on what girls see as the ideal body” (Dockterman par. 12). According to Dockterman, Mattel kept hearing and reading statements and knew they had to make a change before they were out of money. Therefore, Barbie went beyond being just a doll. Barbie had developed a new face and body with different clothes to purchase for the doll as well. Not only did it have accessories and new appearance but eventually its own website where buyers could shop for different looks of Barbies and play games. Sadly, Barbie will never please anyone. Therefore, Mattel has made Barbie perfect that the opinion on her will not change. Children will always see Barbie as an icon and a comparison even with the changes made in Barbie. Barbie will always be perfect, but in the wrong way, and change is not the answer to make her popular again.
